What Causes Anxiety?

To be able to put your finger on one thing and know that it’s the sole cause of your anxiety may be difficult, if not impossible for us to do on our own, or at all.One of the things we see in our Park City, Utah and Jupiter/Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, counseling practice is how major life experiences or changes can trigger symptoms of anxiety when we least expect it. While some Palm Beach Garden residents may have had anxiety due to a chemical imbalance from a very early age, others may never develop problems like panic attacks or symptoms of PTSD until well into adulthood. The truth is, anxiety isn’t always something that we can control; it may be the after effect of other people or choices in our life. When our “flight or fight” response becomes hypersensitive or imbalanced, it can trigger severe or chronic symptoms of anxiety on a day-to-day basis.Anxiety can be caused by any of the following biological or environmental factors:

  • Genetics and family history
  • Chemical imbalances inside of our brains
  • Substance abuse
  • As a side effect of health conditions or medical problems
  • Outside influences such as personal relationships, our job, school, or financial worries

Treating anxiety with medication is only part of the solution. If you are not suffering from a medical imbalance that requires treatment, the best way to manage anxiousness is to schedule cognitive behavioral therapy sessions with a mental health counselor. During these therapeutic appointments, you’ll learn new ways to process stressors and triggers that cause anxiety, and better handle them when they arise. The truth is that anxiety counseling can be life changing for someone who has dealt with panic attacks, past abuse/trauma, significant family changes, nervousness, or PTSD.As you learn to develop healthy coping techniques and stress management practices, you’ll not only start to “think” healthier, you’ll start to feel better as well! Schedule your next appointment at The Dell Center for Therapy in Park City, Utah or Jupiter, Florida today.
