What Causes Anorexia?

Eating disorders like bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa don’t happen overnight. They’re often a gradually occurring disease that become worse with time. Sometimes a person may not even realize that they have an eating disorder like anorexia, even if their friends and family do.

There are various reasons why a person may become anorexic. Some of these include examples like:

  • Being female (anorexia patients are a girl, 9 times out of 10)
  • The onset of puberty (ages 10-25 are most common)
  • Feeling concerned with your body’s shape and size
  • Being fearful of weighing too much
  • Tending to be an overachiever
  • Childhood trauma or painful experiences
  • Hormone imbalances within the brain
  • Family history
  • Psychiatric disorders
  • Feeling depressed, lonely, or have a tendency to avoid other people
  • Being a perfectionist

How Can You Tell if You Are Anorexic?

Usually, you’ll be afraid of too high of a food intake, causing you to gain weight. You might even exercise too much. Anorexics usually feel that they still need to lose more weight, even if they have a healthy body mass index (BMI.)Some anorexics tend to binge on food and then go through vomiting sessions before their body has a chance to absorb the nutrients. Others simply stop eating enough for their body to function normally. The important thing is to get help before you start suffering the mental and physical side-effects of chronic anorexia. At The Dell Center for Therapy, we’re able to confidentially meet with individuals suffering with anorexia, giving them a safe and comfortable place to discuss the struggles that they’re facing. Whether you want to meet in person at our Summit County, Utah office, or live outside of the Palm Beach Gardens area and would prefer to chat over the phone, we’ll meet you where you are.
