What are Eating Disorders?

There’s more to an eating disorder than simply consuming too much food or not eating at all. In reality, there are a number of medical and mental health causes that need consideration when you’re trying to put your finger on what’s behind an imbalanced nutritional condition. The three main types of eating disorders generally affect individuals between the ages of 12-35 and include:

Eating disorders like anorexia cause more deaths than any other type of mental health disorder (according to the National Institute of Mental Health.) They’re closely linked with suicide and issues related to one’s own self-worth.Other eating disorders like bulimia or binge-eating involve elevated or normal food intake, but purging the food before your body has time to absorb the nutrients that it needs to stay healthy.Although eating disorders aren’t restricted to women, females do tend to make up 9 out of 10 individuals that suffer from the disease. Society’s demands on appearance and perfection may be one of the reasons why so many teen girls and young women develop an eating disorder.Fortunately, it’s possible to get help and find ways to recover. Our Park City and Jupiter/Palm Beach Gardens eating disorder therapists help individuals and their families through psychotherapy and counseling to uncover the causes of eating disorders and find healthier ways to cope with them. By working with a nutritionist and a counselor, our Park City, Utah and Jupiter/Palm Beach Gardens, Florida clients can find balanced, healthier lifestyles that bring them enjoyment and reduced anxiety. If you or someone in your family is showing symptoms of an eating disorder, or you’ve been struggling with how to overcome the tendencies to fall into unhealthy eating habits, we invite you to book an appointment in person or online with our Salt Lake City, Palm Beach County, Provo, West Valley and Park City therapists.
