The Most Common Eating Disorders

You have heard of binging and purging, or just avoiding food intake altogether. But did you know that there are more than one or two types of eating disorders? Here are some of the most common eating disorders that we provide counseling for in our Park City and Jupiter/Palm Beach Gardens practice:

Anorexia —

Probably the most common type of eating disorder we see is anorexia nervosa. It’s a decreased caloric intake that usually starts around puberty and predominantly impacts women.Bulimia — Also common in younger women, bulimia nervosa involves eating food and binging afterward, rather than avoiding it altogether. Thus, someone purges in order to lower the number of calories they’ve consumed.

Pica —

Some people crave non-food. Hair is a common example, but it’s not the only one. Things like cloth, dirt, or even soaps/detergents are normal.

Rumination disorders —

About a half hour after a meal, a person will regurgitate the food they’ve eaten, and then re-chew it and swallow, or spit it out.

Avoidant/Restrictive food intake —

Children and some adults avoid eating foods with certain types of smells or tastes. It is sometimes linked with tube feeding or nutritional deficiencies.
